Henderson, Texas is justifiably proud of its history which dates to the romantic days of the Republic of Texas. We have many historical sites for tourists to visit, including the 1855 Howard-Dickinson House just south of the downtown square. Call the Chamber of Commerce to schedule a tour (903-657-5528).
Henderson was once home to 17 cotton plantations of over 10,000 acres each. Monte Verdi, southwest of Henderson, is a wonderful example, having been beautifully restored. Call Joe Koch at 903-241-5730 to visit.
The Depot Museum on North High Street has a variety of historical buildings as well as an antique carousel that is open for rides. Also here is the Children's Discovery Center, with hands-on activities for kids, and a historical museum with artifacts from prehistoric Indian to recent times. For railroad buffs, there is a caboose and the restored Henderson Depot.Call 903-657-4303.
The East Texas Oil Field discovery well is just outside of Henderson off state highway 64 and the East Texas Oil Museum is in nearby Kilgore. Also in Kilgore is the Rangerette Museum. Surrounding cities Longview, Tyler, Marshall, Carthage, Nacogdoches and Jacksonville have many museums and points of interest as well.

Natural Beauty

Henderson is surrounded by rolling hills, sparkling lakes, verdant pastures, and, in the spring and fall, spectacular color. Contact the Henderson Tourism Department at 903-392-8232 to inquire about best times for viewing wildflowers and leaves. Martin Creek Lake has a state park with many amenities including RV/camping/boating/nature trails. Other surrounding lakes incude Murvaul, Stiker, Lake Tyler, Lake Jacksonville. Within an hour or so are larger reservoirs such as Lake Palestine, Lake Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend and Lake O'The Pines.
